Finish Strong: A Final Message for 2021
Well, we are just a few weeks away from ending 2021. Honestly, I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that it is December. Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was writing to you and wishing you success in 2021. Now we stand at the end of another year. I hope that you can look back on the last twelve moments with a sense of accomplishment. If not, I hope that you will take some time to reflect and make adjustments so that 2022 can be a better year for you. I want to share a few insights on finishing strong so that you can set the course for success and prosperity in 2022 and beyond. My prayer for you is that you will dare to finish 2021 strong!
- Take some time and assess your year. While many people try to avoid this, the reality is that avoidance is one of the greatest barriers to your advancement. So take some time and assess your productivity and results in 2021. Do not lie to yourself and say that you had a good year and everything is fine. No, you need to invest the time and energy in examining what went well, what could have been better, and what changes you need to make in 2022. I discovered decades ago that without assessment we will never make the necessary adjustments in our lives. Assessment empowers us to discover what is not working so that we can create the strategies and systems that propel our lives forward. Anything that you are unwilling to assess will always be a place of defeat in your life. Assessment is a catalyst to your achievement.
- Set aside time to evaluate your routines. As someone that has trained and advised leaders around the world, the reality is that we all have a routine. Unfortunately, many times the routines that we put in place are sending our lives in reverse instead of moving our lives forward. Many people come to me for advice because they feel stuck and want to make changes in their lives. However, I am always amused when people become defensive when I ask about their routines. I get a lot of pushback and some even ask what is the relevance of this to making changes in their lives. What most people fail to understand is that your life is a reflection of your routines. If you spend your days binge-watching Netflix and scrolling social media, then I can guarantee that no growth, development, or advancement is happening in your life. Sometimes we can boil it down to laziness. However, most of the time you discover that most people have horrible routines. If you do not change your routines, you will create cycles of regret in your life. I want to challenge you to study your routines. Evaluate where you are investing your time and how you can make better use of your time. Time is a nonrenewable resource. So make sure that you use it wisely. Time should accommodate your goals and facilitate your vision. Time is not to be dominated or defined by distractions.
- Be willing to take responsibility for your life. Now, this is the part where I start to lose most people. I’ve been working with leaders around the world for years. Surprisingly, one of the biggest challenges has been getting people to take responsibility for their lives. We love to shift the blame and deem others responsible for our bad habits, irrational decisions, and toxic behaviors. The reality is that to the degree that you are willing to take responsibility for your life determines the degree to which you rise. If you continue to make excuses for your life, you will only accommodate your failure and engineer your defeat. I want you to own decisions, own your mistakes and own your failures. Responsibility is having the courage to take ownership of where you are in your life currently. Anything that you are unwilling to own will always oppose your growth, development, and advancement. At the end of the day, you are responsible for your life. You are responsible for your success or failure. You are responsible for your advancement or stagnation. Most of all, you are responsible for your development or the lack thereof. Responsibility is the master key to ruling your world and dominating your moments.
- You must develop a strategy. As I am sure you already know, this is not going to be easy for you to do. We tend to let ourselves off the hook and hold others accountable for their actions. However, this is going to force you to see where you have come up short in your own life. After you have followed through on the first three steps, I want you to develop a strategy to help you finish the year strong. Most people are waiting for January 1st to change their lives. However, they fail to understand that the disciplines you establish today will determine the success you experience in 2022 and beyond. Develop a strategy for your spiritual life, health, family, finances, business, personal growth, personal development, etc. A strategy empowers you to define what your priorities are, determine the direction that your life will take, and develop the disciplines to help you reach your desired destination. Strategy makes your goals attainable, your dreams believable and your greatest desires possible. Strategy will empower you to finish 2021 strong and start 2022 with a winning blueprint. In closing, I wish you an incredible finish to 2021 and an empowered beginning to 2022!
